Does your horse know how to back?
Does your horse know how to back up?
Backing up is enormously important. Here's why.
Often a horse will get in your spaceor close to it. When you want him to move,he should move when you ask. It seems likehalf the time the horse needs to "back away"to get out of your space.
If he doesn't understand how to movethen you could get in a wreck.
Second, when your horse is in a horsetrailer he needs to back out. If he hasn'tbeen educated on backing...you may have ahard time gettin' him out.
Third, when you ride there are lots oftimes your horse will need to back up. Ifyou don't have him educated how to do it, your horse simply won't do it. You've gottashow him how to do it from the ground...notfrom the saddle.
One way to teach him backing is to standnext to his shoulder and put your first two fingers into his chest area in front of his legs.
Now push in and create a little pressure. Hold the pressure constant...don't increase it...yet.
Now say "back".
If he doesn't move, increase the pressureto the next level. Say "back".
If he doesn't move, increase pressure.
Repeat until he moves.
The second he backs off the pressure, immediately relieve the pressure of yourfingers.
Pet him and tell him what a good kid he is.
Now do it all over again.
When you get him moving off the pressuregood, then ask for two steps back instead of one.
When he gets good at that, then ask for three...and so on.
Remember, don't try to get him to back alot in one or two days. It'll take a little timeto get him knowing what you want.
