What horse's eyes will tell you...
Yesterday, I told you about a horse's eyes and how it helps you determine whatyour horse is thinking.
There's even more to the story.
For instance, did you know that if yourhorse's lips are tight it indicates stress oruneasiness?
You can also tell by a horse's body. Ifhis muscles are tense chances are he's uptightand he won't listen to you like he would ifhe was relaxed.
You should think about that when you're inthe saddle next time because you can tell how he'sdoing while you're in the saddle. For example,if he's spooking you can feel it in his body.
You can also tell when he's relaxing frombeing spooked. When you're aware that you cantell your horse's feelings it's fun to try anddecipher them.
There are lots of ways to "read a horse'sthoughts".
One of the best ways I've seen is usingJesse Beery's guide to knowing a horse's characteristics.
I don't remember if you own this enormouslyimportant guide or not, so let me talk about ita minute.
Beery identified four types of horses. Hecould tell by looking at the face and head whatthe horse was like.
What's useful about that?
Well, when you train the horse you know, before you start training, what to expect fromthe horse.
For instance, if you spot a horse that's"willfull" (slow to do what you ask) then youknow about how much pressure to apply and whento quit.
Not knowing how much to do or when to quitcan cause training problems and lots of frustration.
When I train, sizing up the horse using thesetechniques is the FIRST thing I do.
Not only is it fun, it makes training easierand I can build a bond with the horse.
If you haven't seen Beery's information yet, check it out. Click here:

Just to give you a sample of his info, here'ssomething he says about a willful horse.
"You can tell a willful horse if he has a heavyjowl. A heavy jowl indicates this horse will bewillful and will likely require more work to train."
But, the jowl isn't the only indicator - be careful NOT to think that just because your horsehas a heavy jowl that he'll be willful. There areother things to consider.
Well, I've ranted and raved enough. I betterlet you go.
Talk to you tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Andy Curry
