Horse Bloopers

Just like Hollywood has bloopers, us
horse people have bloopers too.

In the Wizard of Oz there's a blooper
I bet you didn't realize was there.

In the scene where Dorothy, Tin Man,
and the Scarecrow are dancing down the Yellow
Brick Road singing "We're Off to See the
Wizard,"...that's where the blooper is.

Have you seen it? .

It's an interesting blooper be-
cause unless you knew it was there, you'd
miss it.

Horse training is that way too.
Unless you know for sure that you're doing
something right, you could easily be doing
it wrong - AKA: Blooper.

One blooper is overdoing a lesson
with the horse.

I've seen many a horse owner drill a
horse on something again, and again, and again.
There's a misconception that unless you repeat
it over and over and over with the horse, then
he won't get it and remember it.

What's important is knowing when to
stop. When the horse "gets it", you can do it
with him a few more times then stop doing it.

The next day, you can review it to
keep it locked in memory, and so on.

For instance, if you teach your horse
to double...you only do it with him 3 or 4 times
a day.

Doing it too many times is a good way
to make the horse hate working with you. That,
in turn, makes the horse hard to catch.

Doubling is hard for the horse to do
because it causes him to move his body in smaller
circles that are uncomfortable.

But for the rider, it's a great way to
get that mental control over the horse. If you
review my blog, you can find info on how to
double.

Oh...almost forgot to tell what the
Wizard of Oz blooper was.

A crew member can be seen in the
background among the trees. For years there
were rumors he committed suicide over it -
but the rumors were false.

Adios for today.
