Horse Training: How many ways are there to do it?
Did you know there are 293 ways to
make change for a dollar?
Likewise, there are umpteen ways to
train a horse.
Is one better 'n the other?
Depends on what you believe.
A trainer I recently spoke with here
in Colorado agreed that horse owners should take
what they like from what they learned then use it.
My trainer friend said this: "I tell
people to chew the meat and spit out the bones."
That was his way of telling people to
use what they want.
Here's a training exercise I like to do
with my horses. It's called "poling."
I like to do this because it significantly
reduces your horse's skittishness and sensitivity
to being touched. It helps settle him down.
This gold nugget comes from Jesse Beery.
He was a famous horse trainer from the late 1800's.
Many of his methods are "still" used today because
they are so effective.

After you have taught your horse the confidence
lesson, whoa-ing, and get-up,...poling comes next.
So take a light pole about 6 feet long and
let the colt feel it with his "fingers," (his nose)
and then bring it gently back over the mane and down
his front legs - then back over the back and against
his quarters.
Here's the important part.
If your horse gets excited anytime, start
again in the front and back again until he is bored
with it. In other words, when he could care less
about having his quarters and legs touched with
the pole, then that's what you're lookin' for.
How long will this take?
Roughly 10 to 15 minutes.
You will be surprised how effective this
is on your horse - especially of horses that have a
nervous disposition.
Now if you have a minute, go out and try it.
It's easy and it does wonders for your horse.
