Horse Training Methods: The horse computer

IBM hopes to build an amazing
computer by 2007. They want it to perform
a "Million Billion" operations per second.
If you combined the computing speed
of today's 500 fastest computers in the
world, it wouldn't even do 1/32 of what
IBM hopes to achieve from "one" computer.
Can you imagine? Trillions of
operations in one second or less.
Amazing.
Us humans can only think of one
thing at a time...or so they say.
That's especially true with horses.
They can only think of one thing at a time.
That's an important piece of
knowledge for the average horse owner.
Here's why.
If you're out trail riding and your
horse begins to spook...you can nip it in the
bud.
How?
By getting him to focus on you.
If you catch his "spooking signals"
in time, you can direct his attention to
something else and curtail it.
Remember, horses can only think of
one thing at a time - have them think about
what "you" are asking him to do.
Let's say you're out in some farmer's
field and you ride past a tarp covered hay
stack and the tarp is shaking in the wind.
If your horse isn't used to it, it
will probably inspire a bit of fear in him.
So now you can "ride away" from the
hay stack. As you ride away begin to ride
in a circle - a fairly big circle.
As you ride away, make him walk be-
cause moving fast inspires excitement and you
don't want to inspire more excitement than
he already has.
Get your horse's mind on paying att-
tention to you wanting to ride this circle.
As you ride this circle, you change
gaits from walking, to loping, etc.
As you circle, move closer and closer
to the spooky object.
Keep note of your horse's fear level.
When or if you see him fearing the
object, then retreat away from it but always
go back to it.
Don't let him feel punished from a
severe tone of voice or being kicked in the
ribs.
Remember that this is like helping
a child overcome fear of a dark closet and
your job is to show him there's nothing to
fear - you persuade...he learns.
Like you would hold your child's hand
you will talk confidently and encouragingly
to your horse.
Pet him too.
The problem lots of people run into
is punishing the horse for spooking. While
the horse begins fearing an object and won't
move, the rider chastises the horse. Raises
his voice. Spurs relentlessly in the flanks.
What the unsuspecting rider just did
was inspire another fear in the horse.
Next time the horse walks past the
spooky object he will not only fear the object,
he will now fear being punished.
Ouch!
Sometimes, horse training is counter-
intuitive. It helps to have a mentor or guide.
If you don't have that, a manual is the best
thing. (ie. The Horse Trainer Owner's Manual)
So learn all you can.
That's it for today.
See you manana.
Sincerely,
Andy Curry
